First Basic Life Support Provider Course

In an initiative that could well set the stage for a revolution for training in basic emergency services in the valley, Hakim Sanaullah Specialist Hospital & Cancer Centre (HSSH &CC), Sopore organized its first Basic Life Support Provider Course, in association with leading Kashmiri Physicians in the USA.

The course was conducted at the Srinagar branch of the Hospital, Dr. Shad Salim’s Clinic at Jawahar Nagar and faculty included leading cardiologist Dr. Yusuf Kanjwal, Pulmonologist Dr. Parvez

Mir, both from the USA. The local faculty included Prof Shad Salim Akhtar, from HSSH & CC, Prof Khurshid Iqbal and Prof. Abdul Qayoom, both from SKIMS Soura and Dr. Parvez Ahmed from GMC Sgr. 20 participants including 14 medical students from GMC Sgr, 3 resident doctors and 3 nurses participated in the course which was followed by an examination after which

18 were certified as BLS Providers. In order to provide international standard training, the course was conducted according to the latest AHA guidelines, with HSSH&CC procuring

imported Mannequins from Laerdal Norway and course material according

to AHA guidelines. At the end of the day, the faculty and participants interacted and the

necessity of having such courses in the future was underlined.
